DIGITAL MEDIA TOOLS SHOWREEL 2015/16
Above is my completed showreel which demonstrates and showcases some of the work which I completed and uploaded onto my blog. For the show reel I wanted to have a narrative throughout to link all of the work together and I felt that by using a iMac desktop to showcase this throughout would tie it all together. We had 60 seconds to create our showreel and even though it was a limited time I felt that it gave me a sufficient amount of time to showcase my 4 best projects. I created my show reel on final cut pro x and used a mix of final cut pro x and green screening. Even though I had used adobe after effects throughout the year I felt most comfortable working with final cut pro x and it would give me the best chance to showcase my work.
I found inspiration for the digital edge to the show reel and something out of the box to showcase my work by researching the second years work. I found people such as Michael Haffenden (https://vimeo.com/124852656) used a television screen and this then gave me the inspiration to do something a little different and instead use a computer screen. I also used identical titles sequences on the start of each piece of work to add a cohesive theme between all the work. I also didn't want the titles to be plain and still, so I added a motion graphic around it to make it pleasing to the eye and also add another dynamic feature to the showreel .
With the music used I wanted to use short clips of songs which would match and correspond with the visuals on the screen. For example I used a happy up beat song for my photography as the images are bright and were taken on a sunny day. I then also used a radio transmitter and tension sounds for the interactive map to show and reflect that it was a very intense story being told and to heighten the drama when watching it. In reflection of the comments I received on some of the work, I tried to improve it best that i could such as with my stop motion, alien 'INVADE'. With this one of the comments I received was to add more sound effects that were fitting and added more drama to the sequence, so i added another sound over the top of the current one which I think adds a better effect to the sequence.
In terms of what I've learnt from the digital media module, I feel that by using brand new software such as After Effects and having the opportunity to expand and learn more on software like Photoshop it helped to expand my ability in other editing fields. I also feel that the tasks that were set throughout the year were very valuable in pushing us to learn a new software, which can be very daunting but also to expand our imagination and creativity. This is especially for ways to present stories and narratives in a creative manner and how to incorporate this into our digital, production work. Ive definitely learned a lot from this module and its given me the confidence to try new softwares which I may never have thought of trying.
Overall I’m really happy with the outcome of my showreel and feel that it reflects what I've learnt well while also adding in my own personality and imagination. My favourite part would have to be the titles and the start up of the iMac as i feel these set the tone and engage and interest the audience straight away. If i could change anything about it, it would probably be to find a way to make it flow a little nicer and not be as jumpy and maybe use more after effects to do more things digitally on the interface screen.
